Tuesday, May 14, 2019 – Our Ask the Storm Team Question for today: Is heat lightning real? This was submitted to us by Beth Taylor.
There is no such thing as heat lightning. You have to have a thunderstorm somewhere near you in order for you to see lightning in the sky.
Lightning can travel vertically and horizintally in the sky; therefore, if you see lightning, take a look at the radar. The storm might be miles away from you, but storm clouds can reach heights to 40,000 to 60,000 feet into the atmosphere. This would allow you to see the lightning from miles away.
