Storm Team 11 Weather: Areas of severe weather likely Sunday

Storm Team 11 Forecast:

We have a heightened risk of severe weather Sunday.

Mostly cloudy and very mild tonight. A few showers possible. Winds pick up in the mountains late. A High Wind Warning will go into effect for the east Tennessee mountains and nearby foothills at Midnight. All day Sunday winds will be strong. Even in the Tri-Cities and SW Virginia, it will be windy.

A few rounds of thunderstorms move through Sunday. The Storm Prediction Center still has our entire area under an enhanced risk, which is a level 3 out of 5. The greatest concern for severe weather is expected during the afternoon and evening hours. Damaging winds, large hail, and even a couple tornadoes are the main threats. Keep in mind we will also have lightning and heavy downpours.  Any sunshine we get will Sunday just increase our chances of severe weather by making the atmosphere more unstable. Temperatures push well into the 70s, if not 80 degrees in spots.

Have your NOAA Weather Radio turned on, download the WJHL Weather App, and check back for updates.

The severe weather threat should pass by 10 p.m. Sunday. In its wake, much cooler air will push through. Scattered showers continue Sunday night and Monday morning. We could even see a light wintry mix in the higher elevations. The Tri-Cities will wake up to the low to mid 40s Monday morning.

Partly to mostly cloudy skies Monday means we’ll have a high around 58 degrees. Monday night will be the coldest with lows in the mid to upper 30s. Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon highs are on track to reach the mid to upper 70s.

Another round of thunderstorms is becoming more likely late Thursday into Friday.

Take care,
