Welcome to the twelfth edition of StormTeam11 Starwatch! This is a blog that will be posted weekly that will list events happening in the sky this week!
Monday, February 5th – Sunday, February 11th 2018:
This week the moon will pass by Jupiter, Mars and Saturn. The moon will pass by Jupiter Monday morning and then continue to pass by Mars and Saturn later in the week.
The image below explains the progression. This occurs at 6 AM each day when you look to the SE. You won’t need binoculars or a telescope to see these events!
Sunday, February 11th 2018:
Mars will also be close to the star Antares at around 6 AM, which is a part of Scorpius, the Scorpion. Antares is known as the heart of the Scorpion and is Greek for “Rivaling Mars”. This is because Antares and Mars are often confused. The Greek word for Mars is Ares, which is also the god of war.
Special thanks to Adam Thanz from Bays Mountain Park & Planetarium and Dr. Gary Henson from ETSU for this information.
