Wet weather is expected to return this evening and tonight with very sloppy conditions around the region. The initial surge of moisture will move into a very dry atmosphere leading to evaporation. This evaporational cooling process will cool the air and allow a brief wintry mix to develop in the Tri-Cities before changing to all rain this evening and tonight. The Blue Ridge Mountains will see a more significant wintry mix with a prolonged mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain.
A WINTER STORM WARNING is in effect for western NC extending into SW VA from Wythe county on northward. Travel in these areas is NOT recommended later this evening and tonight.
Looking ahead, heavy rain will likely set-up over Kentucky into middle TN, while strong and persistent downsloping winds will keep the Tri-Cities relatively dry through the day on Wednesday, with rain more likely Wednesday evening. FLOOD WATCHES are in effect for all of Kentucky, and include VA counties that border Kentucky.
Today: Mostly cloudy with mid 40’s, then rain and a wintry mix arrives this evening.
Tonight: Rain likely, mix in the mountains with temperatures in the upper 30’s to low 40’s.
