Weather

Storm Team 11 Forecast:

Good Evening!

We are tracking our next weather maker moving into the area tonight. Rain, with a brief period of a wintry mix is possible in the Tri-Cities before changing back to rain, likely staying as a mix of freezing rain, sleet and snow showers for places in Western North Carolina and into parts of Southwest Virginia (Grayson, Smyth, Wythe and Tazewell counties) through tonight. Tonight there is an 80% chance for rain/wintry mix with a low of 37 degrees.

Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories go into effect tonight and extend through tomorrow afternoon for parts of Southwest Virginia and Western North Carolina. Those under the Winter Storm Warning have the better opportunity to see 1 to 3 inches of snowfall as well as up to two tenths of an inch of ice. If you are under the Winter Weather Advisory, snowfall totals will likely be a trace to an inch with up to a tenth of an inch of ice.

Additionally, Flood Watches go into effect tonight and extend through Thursday morning for parts of Southwest Virginia and Eastern Kentucky where 1-3″ of rainfall is possible on top of already saturated soils. This could cause flooding, so make sure to never drive through flooded roadways.

Finally, High Wind Warnings and Wind Advisories go into effect late tonight and extend through tomorrow afternoon for parts of the Tennessee mountains as well as portions of Southwest Virginia. Winds could gust up to 65 mph for those under the High Wind Warning.

Tomorrow there is a 60% rain chance with scattered showers as well as a brief wintry mix possible for the higher elevations early. The good news though is that tomorrow is trending drier during the daytime hours due to downsloping winds off the mountains. Tomorrow’s high is 56 degrees.

Rain will return tomorrow night with the chance for a few thunderstorms as well as some locally heavy downpours. Remember to never drive through flooded roadways.

Thursday is looking drier with a 30% chance for scattered showers early before we see a few breaks of sunshine. Highs will be in the low 60s.

Rain returns for Friday and Saturday.

Have a great night and stay safe!
