Update (5:15 p.m., May 14) – Details have been released for a candlelight memorial service for Ronald S. Sanchez, Jr.

Authorities say James Jordan killed Sanchez on the Appalachian Trail in Wythe County on May 10.

According to Linda Austin with the Trail Days Ministry group, the service will be held May 16 on the Backer Field. That’s between Laurel Pharmacy and One Way Ministries in Damascus.

The candlelight service will begin at dark.

Original Story – As people in Damascus, Va. prepare for one of the town’s busiest weekends of the year, Trail Days organizers are working to add to their schedule.

According to Linda Austin with the Trail Days Ministry group, plans are being made for a service in memory of the Appalachian Trail hiker stabbed to death May 10 in Wythe County.

The hiker was camping with three others when James Jordan started threatening them.

Two other hikers got away without injuries. A third was stabbed multiple times.

Austin told News Channel 11 that the plans for the memorial service include a possible candlelight vigil on the night of May 16. A location and time have not been confirmed at this time.

Austin said a grief counselor will be made available during Trail Days at One Way Ministries at 1004 South Shady Avenue in Damascus.
