“I guess yesterday my luck turned around.”

That’s how Samuel “Sammy” Justus reacted to winning $200,000 in the Virginia Lottery’s Jewel 7s Scratcher game.

The Grundy man told Lottery officials he’d had heart surgery just three weeks prior to buying four tickets at Medical Park Pharmacy on Slate Creek Road in Grundy. When he scratched the tickets, he discovered that one of them won the game’s $200,000 top prize.

“I still don’t believe it!” he said as he claimed his prize.

Jewel 7s (game #1773) is one of the dozens of Scratcher games available from the Virginia Lottery. Tickets can be Blue Sapphire, Green Emerald, Ruby Red or White Diamond. Mr. Justus’ winning ticket was a Blue Sapphire. Prizes range from $5 to $200,000. The odds of winning the top prize in this game are 1 in 734,400. The odds of winning any prize are 1 in 4.27.

Now in its 30th year, the Virginia Lottery generates more than $1.6 million per day for Virginia’s K-12 public schools. Operating entirely on revenue from the sale of Lottery products, the Lottery generated more than $600 million for Virginia’s public schools in Fiscal Year 2018. In addition, more than $14 million in unclaimed Virginia Lottery prizes went to Virginia’s Literary Fund in FY18 for school construction and technology upgrades.
