TDEC officials testing Watauga Lake water after viewer reports brown coloration

CARTER COUNTY, Tenn. (WJHL)- After a News Channel 11 viewer reached out on social media asking ‘Why is the water in Watauga Lake brown?’ we reached out to Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation officials to get answers.

According to TDEC, when staff at Watauga Lake performed a visual inspection Wednesday, they confirmed “the appearance of a brown coloration. This may be due to naturally-occurring seasonal changes, but a water quality sample was taken for further evaluation.”

Officials also responded saying it would take a few days for those results to come in.
