New businesses adding to Erwin’s economy

The town of Erwin has seen a lot of growth throughout the years.

Erwin Outdoor Supply had their grand opening Saturday. Many community members came out for the event along with Erwin’s Mayor, Doris Hensley.

“With the opening of the Erwin Outdoor Supply it really boosts the economy of Erwin. Since it has opened, we have seen two other businesses on this street alone opened up new businesses also,” said Hensley

She says that since the railroad went out, the town had to rethink what they wanted Erwin to be. Since then, Erwin has revamped their downtown, which Hensley says has encouraged a lot of businesses to locate to the area.

The co owner of Erwin Outdoor Supply, Tyler Bevins, says that his wife is from Erwin and that they couldn’t think of a better place to open their doors.

“I feel like it’s been a long time coming for Erwin. There’s so much to do, and this area has so much to offer. We have the Appalachian Trail about a mile from the building. We got the Nolichucky that’s just a stones throw, and I guess it was yesterday or the day before the town of Erwin got a grant for a mountain biking trail up on the watershed,” said Bevins.

That grant was awarded by the International Mountain Bicycling Association and will link to existing trails. The IMBA awarded four Trail Accelerator Grants. To learn more about those grants click here

The Executive Director of Unicoi County Economic Development Board, Tyler Engle, thanked the Erwin Outdoor Supply owners at the ribbon cutting.

“Thank you so much for choosing Erwin. Thank you for choosing Unicoi County. Thank you for choosing Union Street. Your belief in downtown just proves that Erwin and Unicoi County are continuing to move forward. Our outdoor economy is moving forward,” he said.
