UPDATE: A Hamblen County woman was killed Friday morning when a large, dead tree limb fell on her while she was unloading trash from her car on W. Pierce Drive in Talbott.
The county coroner confirms Barbara Wise, 85, had driven down from her house on a hill overlooking Cherokee Lake when heavy winds brought down part of a dead tree, hitting her directly on the head.
Coroner Eddie Davis says Wise was killed instantly. He said if she had been standing a foot in any direction, the tree would have missed her entirely.
Davis says this is one of the “freakiest” incidents he’s seen in his 29 years as coroner.
A woman died Friday morning when a dead tree limb fell on her in East Tennessee.
According to the National Weather Service, an 85-year-old woman was struck by a dead tree limb near Talbott, TN southwest of Morristown in Hamblen County.
“A gust of wind associated with a rain shower of around 30-40 mph caused a large limb to break free from a dead tree,” the National Weather Service in Morristown said in a statement issued Friday night.
The weather service said conditions were “just below wind advisory criteria.”
