A recipient of the Medal of Honor addressed veterans and city leaders in Kingsport Monday.
Specialist Kyle White went beyond the call of duty while serving during combat operations in Afghanistan in 2007.
Specialist White and his comrades were ambushed on a steep mountainside. White was able to return fire, risking his own life to return to save an injured comrade and radio for help, despite being injured himself.
Specialist White said he remembers the moment he received the phone call from former President Obama notifying him about the Medal of Honor.
“They say you have a conversation with the President about being awarded the Medal of Honor, but, for me, it was mostly him just talking at me and me saying yes Mr. President. It was quite the experience to get the official notification,” said White.
Specialist White said he is honored to continue to speak on behalf of veterans and to continue to advocate for better health care and jobs after their service to our country.
