Hikes, volunteer opportunities planned for National Trails Day

State parks in Southwest Virginia and Northeast Tennessee are hosting hikes and volunteer opportunities for National Trails Day.

National Trails Day was started by the American Hiking Society in 1993 and falls on the first Saturday of June. The day is meant to bring together outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy and help maintain trails.

Here’s a look at events being hosted in Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia for National Trails Day.

Northeast Tennessee

  1. National Trails Day Toddler Trek 11 a.m., David Crockett Birthplace State Park
  2. National Trails Day Hike 10 a.m., Roan Mountain State Park.
  3. National Trails Day: The Bear Track 8 a.m., Rocky Fork State Park
  4. National Trails Day Bird Walk 8:30 a.m., Warriors’ Path State Park

Southwest Virginia

  3. National Trails Day Wild Cave Tour: Bowling Cave 2 p.m., Natural Tunnel State Park
  4. National Trails Day Hike to Mt Rogers 9 a.m., Grayson Highlands State Park
  5. National Trails Day Trail Maintenance 10 a.m., Grayson Highlands State Park
  6. National Trails Day Salamander Meander 8 p.m., Grayson Highlands State Park
  7. National Trails Day Trail Cleanup 10 a.m., Wilderness Road State Park
  8. National Trails Day Geocaching 1 p.m., Southwest Virginia Museum

Also in Southwest Virginia, the Mt. Rogers Appalachian Trail Club is working to restore a misused camping spot on the Appalachian Trail in Damascus. The event starts at 9 a.m.
