Police capture man accused of killing woman, 87, in hit and run crash

SMYTH COUNTY, Va. (WJHL) - Virginia State Police arrested a Marion, VA man in connection with Sunday morning's fatal hit-and-run crash in Smyth County. 

Joseph H. Kestner, 31, has been identified as the suspect and driver of the Honda that crashed into a home in the 500 block of Riverside Road -- killing 87-year-old Margaret A. Poe. 

Poe was the only one at home at the time of the crash. 

State police said Kestner took the tag off the vehicle and ran away. 

Kestner has been charged with fatal hit-and-run, failure to report a crash, and involuntary manslaughter. He is being transported to the Southwest Virginia Jail in Abingdon.
