ELIZABETHTON, TN- The Appalchian League has reached its midway point of the season with just over a month of baseball remaining.
The reigning champion Elizabethton Twins are sitting atop the league’s West standings, posting at 22-13 record so far this year. The Twins currently hold a 4 game lead on second place Kingsport. The Twins, who lead the West in batting average and hits, were also the only team in the West with a record over .500 entering Sunday.
While developing players is more important than wins and losses at this level, it’s still an added bonus to see themselves sitting in first place halfway through the year.
“We’ve been able to promote guys, six or seven guys, up to the next level, which is what it’s all about,” said manager Ray Smith. “Now, don’t get me wrong, we want to win. We want to do all we can do to win. We think that’s part of the developmental process. But it’s all about developing players and getting them out of this league. Allowing them to be in a position to earn their way out of this league and to have success at the next level and eventually, three or four years down the road, arrive in Minnesota and help that club win.”
