UVa-Wise Announces Initial 18 Football Signees

WISE – – Head Coach Dane Damron and his staff announced the signing of 18 initial recruits for the 2016 football season. The group of 18 is composed primarily of Virginia residents, with the lone exception being Douglasville, Ga. native Kam Watts. Seven of the future Cavaliers come from Roanoke or westward in the state with a trio of the recruits coming from the Richmond metro area.

“We are extremely excited about the young men who have signed with us this signing period,” said first-year Head Coach Dane Damron. “We feel very good about the quality and depth of this class so far. Our coaches have done a tremendous job in a short amount of time.”

Rappahannock High School’s Anthony Darby comes to UVa-Wise after a senior season that saw him earn Conference 43 Defensive Player of the Year and Second-Team All-State acclaim under the direction of Head Coach William West. The 6-foot-4 290 pound lineman earned all-conference acclaim as both as an offensive and defensive lineman during his prep career and chose to become a Cavalier after receiving interest from Virginia Military Institute, Townson, James Madison University and Norfolk State.Darby’s Highlights.

Eastern View High School product Bryce Harty finished his career as a First-Team All-Conference performer on both sides of the ball while being a Second-Team All-State selection at defensive end. The 6-foot-4 215 pound Harty served as team captain last season and chose to come to UVa-Wise after receiving interest from Glenville State, West Virginia State, Concord and Alderson Broaddus.Harty’s Highlights

A three-sport standout at nearby John I. Burton High School, Isaac Perrigan finished his prep career with a wealth of accomplishments. As a senior, the 5-foot-11 195 pound athlete earned First-Team All-State honors as a punt returner playing for Head Coach Jimbo Adams. This spring, Perrigan will attempt to repeat as an individual state champion in both the 300 and 400 meter race at the state track meet. He comes to UVa-Wise after receiving interest from Ferrum, Carson-Newman, Emory and Henry, Old Dominion, Virginia Military Institute and Campbell. Jay’Ronn Lovelace comes to UVa-Wise after being a two-sport athlete at William Fleming High School. The 6-foot-1 175 pound Lovelace, chose UVa-Wise because of the academic value, scenic campus and athletic facilities.Lovelace’s Highlights

K’Jon Cooley finished his high school career as a two-time state champion at Richmond’s Benedictine Prep. The 5-foot-10 165 pound defensive back also runs track and decided to become a Cavalier because he believes he can reach his full potential as a student and as an athlete. The defensive back received interest from Virginia State University, James Madison University and Virginia Military Institute.Cooley’s Highlights

Richlands High School’s Landon Mance finished his prep career as Conference 39’s Offensive Lineman of the Year. Playing for his father Greg, the younger Mance earned First-Team All-State acclaim as a junior. The 6-foot-2 270 pound Mance aided the Blues to a combined 30 wins over the past three seasons.Mance’s Highlights

Serving as team captain for Head Coach David Coccoli, Marquis Braimer was tabbed the Nike 757 All-Star Classic Southside Premier Player. The 5-foot-10 175 pound cornerback was also selected First-Team All-Conference as a defensive back and kick returner. Braimer chose UVa-Wise after receiving interest from Norfolk State, Hampton, Campbell, Randolph Macon and Virginia Military Institute.Braimer’s Highlights

Quentin Alls comes to UVa-Wise after aiding Glenvar High School to a 26-2 mark over the last two seasons. The 6-foot-1 260 pound defensive lineman was an all-state honoree for Coach Kevin Clifford in 2014 as the Highlanders claimed the VHSL AA crown. A year ago, Glenvar posted an undefeated regular season as Alls was named First-Team All-State for a second time. He comes to UVa-Wise after receiving interest from the University of Charleston, Christopher Newport and Emory and Henry.Alls’ Highlights

An all-state honoree at Hopewell High School, 5-foot-10 174 pound Victor Figueroa led Coach Ricky Irby’s team to a state semifinal appearance in 2015. The defensive back also received interest from Virginia Military Institute, Bluefield College and Randolph Macon.Figueroa’s Highlights

A two-time all-conference tight end at Central High, 6-foot-3 225 pound Daniel England will play collegiate football in his hometown. Under the direction of Head Coach Luke Owens, England aided the Warriors to consecutive playoff appearances. Daniel’s brother, Nick is a member of UVa-Wise’s golf team.England’s Highlights

Bassett cornerback Jeremyah Hairston comes to UVa-Wise after leading the Bengals in interceptions in each of the last three seasons. The 5-foot-8 156 pound Hairston was a four-year letter winner for Bassett and served as team captain in 2015.Hairston’s Highlights

“We are very excited about the speed and athleticism we have signed on the defensive side of the ball. That has been our goal since we got here to add length and speed to our roster,” mentioned Damron. “We have really upgraded the depth chart in the secondary. On the offensive side of the ball, we have gotten bigger and more athletic on the line of scrimmage. We have signed kids up front that we believe can play multiple positions.”

Damron and his staff aren’t finished recruiting players for this fall.

“We are still out recruiting and continuing to add to what we feel is a very talented first class for us here,” said Damron.

The 2016 “Red – Gray Game” will take place on April 16 at Carl Smith Stadium. UVa-Wise begins the 2016 season on Sept. 1 at Tusculum College.
