Union, Virginia native James Mitchell shines in the Va Tech spring football game

Blacksburg, VA - Virginia Tech rising sophomore tight end-- James Mitchell-- formerly played at Union high school in Southwest Virginia.

Now he's lookinig to make an impact in the maroon and orange.

An impressive performance by the Big Stone gap native at Virginia Tech's spring game this past weekend... connecting with quarterback Ryan Willis on this 29-yard touchdown catch.

After playing in all 13 games for the Hokies last year-- mainly on special teams-- Mitchell is hoping to prove he can do it all-- on offense.

RYAN WILLIS: "That kid's going to be special. James he's a big, physical athlete. He's one of our fastest guys on the team and he's playing tight end. It makes him very versatile, we can put him out wide, we can make him block, I'm really proud of that kid the way he's done, he's got a bright future ahead of him."

JAMES MITCHELL: "The more things you can do, the more options you can get on the field, so that's something I'm definitely striving to be, a versatile player. I really wanted to play just in front of the fans and just show everybody how hard I've been working."

JUSTIN FUENTE: "He knows what he needs to work on to continue to be become a better player, he's not a finished product by any means, but he can do so many different things, he's very valuable and there are some guys who have the talent to do a bunch of different things, but maybe can't handle it all, but James, he can handle all of it."
