With several programs across the country naming their starting quarterback for their opening games, the Tennessee Vols say their race is still too close to call.
Returning starter Jarrett Guarantano and Stanford graduate transfer Keller Chryst were bracketed as co-starters on the depth chart Tennessee released late Monday morning.
The Vols have said their quarterback competition was a four-man battle for most of the preseason, but there’s no surprise it’s come down to Guarantano and Chryst, and maybe that’s the reason the Vols have declined to tip their hand.
“With all the positions that we have, we still have competition. The best teams that I have ever been a part of, there’s lots of times that guys may start the first game, but don’t start the fifth game. You have guys that have been in the program longer than others, that have a little better understanding of what we are trying to get done. You have guys who may have more ability that don’t understand just yet and as they get more opportunities, they might get a chance, and when they get a chance, they have to make the most of it. With every position, it’s really fluid.”
