Milligan’s Dockery and Geren guide Buffs to 3-0 win over Bluefield

Behind strong performances from Julie Dockery and Kellee Geren, the Milligan College volleyball team snapped their two game skid with a straight set win (25-12, 25-18, 25-22) over Bluefield College (5-8, 3-4) Tuesday night at Steve Lacy Fieldhouse. With the victory, the Buffaloes improve to 10-4 overall and 4-2 in Appalachian Athletic Conference play.

“I’m happy to see us rebound from the weekend,” said head coach Doneva Bays. “Our focus coming in was on our communication and controlling our side of the net, which I feel like we did an exceptional job of tonight. I’m happy with the consistency we have been receiving from our upperclassmen.”

It was a hot start for Milligan as they dominated the first set 25-12 as the offense converted 16 of their 34 attacks for a .412 hitting percentage.

Geren would record four of her seven kills in the second set as the Buffs built an early advantage and never looked back winning 25-18.

The third and final set proved to be the closest of the match as Milligan would pull away late after falling behind for the first time all night. Bluefield took a 12-11 lead midway through, but the Buffs would outscore the Rams 14 to 10 the rest of the way for the sweep.

Dockery tallied a match-high 15 kills on 22 attempts and only one error for a .636 hitting percentage. Elise Gregory put down seven kills and three service aces, while Abby Falcone added six kills to pace the Buffs offensively.

Geren controlled the offense with 30 assists for an average of 10 per set and also recorded a .538 hitting percentage. Alyssa Rupert, the reigning AAC defender of the week, scooped up 21 digs to set the tone defensively for the Buffs.

Overall, Milligan finished off 38 attacks compared to Bluefield’s 34 and registered eight aces to the Rams’ four.

Milligan College will wrap up their four game homestand with an AAC match against Montreat with first serve set for 6:30 p.m. Thursday. The Buffs will then head to Columbia, South Carolina, Saturday for matchups against Allen University and Columbia College.
