ELIZABETHTON, TN (WJHL) – A race benefiting a local former principal who is battling a life-threatening disease is happening in Elizabethton tonight.
The Wheels for Wandell 5K will help Dr. Josh Wandell buy a custom race chair so he can get back to racing alongside his friends and family as he battles ALS.
Before his diagnosis, Wandell was an avid runner. Tonight’s fundraiser is to help Wandell get a new buggy so he can continue to participate in running events.
Event volunteer, Kelly Geagley said, “(Wandell) loved to run and had done half marathons. Josh thought his running a marathon days were over and then we found out about the cart and now they’ve raised enough money to get him a cart so now he’ll be able to get in all the marathons he wants to get in.”
The race was held at 6 p.m. on the Tweetsie Trail near Elizabethton High School, but you, too, can get involved by making a donation on the 5k’s website at: Wheels for Wandell Donations or visit Team Wandell’s Facebook page for more information.
A new cart for Wandell will run around $7,000, including modifications, and organizers say this event is one step closer to helping them reach their goal.Copyright 2016 WJHL. All rights reserved.
