VDH: 222 new COVID-19 cases in Southwest Virginia; 2 new deaths

RICHMOND, Va. (WJHL) — Southwest Virginia counties reported 222 new COVID-19 cases and two new deaths Sunday, according to the Virginia Department of Health (VDH).

Scott and Washington counties each reported one new death due to the novel coronavirus.

After declining the week of Christmas, the region’s 14-day average of new daily cases has risen steadily the past week.

Statewide, VDH reported 303,881 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the Commonwealth.

According to VDH, the total number of confirmed and probable cases is 363,765.

VDH reports there have been 4,516 confirmed coronavirus-related deaths across the state.

Note: VDH does not report whether cases are active or recovered. County and community case totals can include active, recovered, confirmed and probable cases.

Bristol, Va. – 946 cases / 44 hospitalizations/ 8 deaths (9 new cases/ 1 new hospitalization)
Buchanan County – 902 cases / 60 hospitalizations/ 23 deaths (10 new cases)
Dickenson County – 661 cases / 26 hospitalizations/ 6 deaths (18 new cases/ 1 new hospitalization)
Lee County – 1,550 cases / 64 hospitalizations/ 30 deaths (19 new cases/ 2 new hospitalizations)
Norton – 175 cases / 10 hospitalizations/ 1 death (1 new case)
Russell County – 1,593 cases / 91 hospitalizations / 16 deaths (20 new cases/ 1 new hospitalization)
Scott County – 1,252 cases / 84 hospitalizations / 36 deaths (8 new cases/ 1 new hospitalization/ 1 new death)
Smyth County – 1,884 cases / 118 hospitalizations / 56 deaths (27 new cases/ 1 new hospitalization)
Tazewell County – 2,519 cases/ 93 hospitalizations/ 23 deaths (33 new cases/ 2 new hospitalizations)
Washington County, Va. – 3,108 cases / 198 hospitalizations / 48 deaths (50 new cases/ 3 new hospitalizations/ 1 new death)
Wise County – 2,132 cases / 114 hospitalizations / 60 deaths (27 new cases/ 6 new hospitalizations)

The Virginia Department of Health does not report recoveries from the virus.
