UPDATE: Former volunteer police chaplain charged with child sex crimes

News

A former volunteer police chaplain is facing child sex charges after a month-long investigation.

Washington County Sheriff Ed Graybeal says Anthony Dale Padgett, age 51 of Jonesborough, has been charged with statutory rape by an authority figure and solicitation of a minor.

Johnson City Police Major Debbie Botelho confirms Padgett is a former volunteer chaplain with JCPD. She says he signed up in 2014 and was “recently” taken off the list, but unsure of exactly when. According to Botelho, he was minimally involved as a chaplain.

Padgett was already behind bars for violation of an order of protection on November 13.

His bond was set at $30,000 and he has already waived his rights to a preliminary hearing.

News Channel 11 was told the next step is for this case to be presented to a Grand Jury in the near future. If Padgett makes bond, he’s been ordered to not contact the victim and to submit a DNA sample.

Sheriff Graybeal says more charges are possible in this case.  News Channel 11 will continue to follow this story for the latest developments.
