SULLIVAN COUNTY, TN (WJHL) – The Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office said two Blountville schools were placed on lockdown Thursday morning, after a suspended student was spotted near school property with what appeared to be a gun.

According to a SCSO news release, the sheriff’s office received a report that a juvenile male had been seen near Blountville Elementary School’s playground with what appeared to be a black handgun.

Blountville Elementary School and Blountville Middle School were both placed on lockdown.

Teachers reportedly recognized the juvenile as a student who had been suspended from Blountville Middle School earlier this week.

Deputies searched the area and found the juvenile in a nearby neighborhood, but he did not have the gun in his possession.

The juvenile told detectives that he was carrying an airsoft gun when he was on school property.

Deputies found the gun a short time later and they confirmed it was an airsoft pistol.

The juvenile was released to his guardian and the case has been referred to juvenile court.

Charges are pending in the case.Copyright 2016 WJHL. All rights reserved.
