Trial set for former Holston View Elem. program assistant

SULLIVAN COUNTY, TN (WJHL) – The woman at the center of a child neglect case at a Tri-Cities elementary school now knows when she will go to trial.

Cherith Roberts, the former Holston View Elementary School program assistant, pleaded not guilty to child neglect in court Monday.

Earlier this year, judge dismissed the child abuse trial of former Holston View Principal Jerry Poteat after his attorney argued the wording in the indictment was “legally insufficient.”

The Sullivan County District Attorney’s Office’s opposed the judge’s decision saying there was no issue, but as a result it changed Roberts’ indictment to make sure her case doesn’t get dismissed.

“We did go back to grand jury based on that ruling and add additional language, as I said before, out of an abundance of caution,” Assistant District Attorney Julie Canter said.

Though the cases are separate, the alleged victim in both cases is the same Kindergarten student.

Roberts is set to go to trial in December.Copyright 2016 WJHL. All rights reserved.
