WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – Tennessee Senator Lamar Alexander was one of the Republicans who enthusiastically voted to kill a version of the Democratic blueprint to fight climate called the Green New Deal.
But Alexander says climate change is real, humans contribute to it, and the US needs to take action to develop renewable energy sources and protect the planet.
Alexander has come up with his own 10-point plan that he says would reduce carbon emissions without damaging to the American economy.
“Doubling energy research, building advanced reactors, better batteries, greener buildings, electric cars,” Sen. Alexander said.
At least some environmentalists say the senator’s ideas are a good first step.
“We need members of Congress from both sides of the aisle to come to the table to put their best ideas forward,” said Elizabeth Gore with the Environmental Defense Fund.
Alexander’s position in Congress might help him advance his proposal. He is chairman of the subcommittee that funds energy research.
