SULLIVAN COUNTY, TN  (WJHL) – The Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a drowning at South Holston Lake.  The Sheriff’s Office said a group of friends were swimming in 25 to 30-foot deep water Monday afternoon when a friend began to struggle.

They tried to save the victim, but were unable to.

Detectives said the friends immediately called 911.

First responders arrived at the Highway 421 boat ramp in front of Laurel Marina around 2:45 p.m. and immediately found the body of a college-aged male.

Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Leslie Earhart said an off-duty dive member of the Kingsport rescue squad was nearby when it happened and pulled the victim’s body out of the water before Sullivan County first responders arrived.

The Sheriff’s Office says he was not wearing a life jacket and it’s unclear why he began to struggle.

The group was also not swimming near a boat.

The Sullivan County coroner arrived on scene just before 4:30 p.m.

Investigators have not identified the drowning victim, as they’re still trying to notify family members.
