KNOXVILLE (WATE) – A shoplifting suspect is dead after being shot by a Knox County deputy at a West Knoxville sporting goods store after officials say hit two deputies with his car.

The incident was reported around 9 p.m. Friday at Academy Sports, 145 Moss Grove Boulevard in the Cedar Bluff area.

Knoxville Police Department spokesperson Darrell DeBusk says deputies with the Knox County Sheriff’s Office Holiday Task Force noticed someone trying to shoplift from the store and followed him into the parking lot where the suspect refused commands to stop.

The suspect then got into a vehicle, struck one deputy with his car and ran over another deputy. One of the deputies fired shots at the suspect, who died at the scene.

The suspect’s car crashed into at least two parked vehicles. Both deputies suffered non-life threatening injuries. No one else was hurt.

The names of those involved have not been released.
