Sheriff: Woman arrested for selling drugs next door to day care

News

ERWIN, Tenn. (WJHL) –  A Unicoi County woman was arrested Wednesday after the Sheriff said she was selling drugs next door to a day care center.

Anna Fitzgerald, 52, was arrested after a months-long investigation by the Unicoi County Sheriff’s Office. She’s facing multiple drug charges after investigators said she was selling suboxone from her work place.

“We’ve always been friendly next door, she’s always come over and talked to the kids,” said Melissa Hampton, who owns Kiddie Junction Learning Center, a day care that is next door to where the Unicoi County Sheriff’s Office arrested a woman for selling drugs.

“They’ve actually made 2 buys over the last 2 months and today they made another buy of suboxone,” said Unicoi County Sheriff Mike Hensley.

Hensley said Anna Fitzgerald was selling drugs from her workplace, Cash Express, but that the business itself was not involved.

“Just a bad employee working for them,” Hensley told News Channel 11.

The Sheriff said the fact that a day care is next door made the case even more serious.

“Anytime you’ve got someone selling drugs, especially close to a day care center, you’ve got the drug clientele coming, its a dangerous situation,” he said.

“It scares me to death because our playground is right there. I have little kids that are out there all the time, and knowing that scares me to death to know that was 20 feet from my playground with my kids out there everyday playing,” Hampton said.

Hampton said now that Fitzgerald is behind bars, she, and the parents of the children she cares for, can breathe a sigh of relief.

“They entrust us with the safety of their children. The sheriff’s department was right on top of it and I couldn’t ask for a better outcome,” she said.

Fitzgerald is being held on a $22,000 bond.
