GREENE COUNTY, TN (WJHL) – Greene County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested an Afton woman on murder charges following an investigation into the death of a 21-year-old pregnant woman last August.
Sheriff Pat Hankins said during a news conference Wednesday that a Greene County grand jury returned an indictment this week charging Vonda Star Smith with two counts of first-degree murder.
On Aug. 12, Jessie N. Morrison’s body was discovered on the side of the road near Jud Neal Loop in Afton.
According court documents, Morrison was killed by blunt force injuries.
Morrison, already a mother of two children, was pregnant with her third child at the time of her death and resulted in the second charge of first-degree murder.
Smith is reportedly the grandmother of one of Morrison’s children.
The sheriff’s office and special agents with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation jointly investigated the homicide.
Smith was arrested on Wednesday and is currently being held in the Greene County Detention Center on an $800,000 bond.
She was scheduled to appear in court on May 12 at 9 a.m.
