KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) University of Tennessee head basketball coach Rick Barnes has been named Coach of the Year by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association.

The USBWA announced Monday that Barnes is the winner of the Henry Iba Award. This is the first time Barnes has won this award and the first time a Tennessee coach has won it. Barnes is also the first SEC coach to win the award since 2003.

Barnes led the Volunteers to a 29-5 finish in the regular season and a school-record 19-game win stream. The Vols were ranked in the top 10 for the entire season and were ranked No. 1 for four weeks in a row.

Barnes will be honored at the USBWA College Basketball Awards Dinner at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis on Monday, April 15.

The Vols will face Purdue on Thursday in the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16. The game is set to tip off at 7:29 p.m. and will be broadcast on TBS.
