RUTHERFORD COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) — Authorities are searching for a gunman after two men were shot on Interstate 840 in Rutherford County Monday morning.
The shooting happened in the westbound lanes near the Almaville Road exit around 6:30 a.m.
The Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office reported one victim was admitted to a Nashville hospital and the second victim treated and released.
Officers are currently searching for the suspect and detectives are investigating and gathering evidence.
Detectives are asking the public for information about the shooting.
“Two men were struck by gunfire when an unknown individual opened fire on their vehicle as they traveled to a job site,” Detective Capt. Todd Sparks said. “The small, black SUV they were traveling in was struck multiple times.”
The victims believe the suspect was driving a larger SUV, possibly silver in color.
The westbound lanes of the roadway were closed while deputies rerouted drivers onto Veterans Parkway toward State Route 96 during the investigation.
Gerard Thorpe said he got caught in the traffic after already being delayed by a wreck on I-24.
“From my house all the way here is 15 minutes,” he told News 2 Monday morning during the traffic halt. “But this morning there was a wreck off 24 just getting on 840, and then when I came around 840, this thing happens. It was a very, very bad morning to be late.”
He added he was stuck in traffic for an hour and a half before they came upon the crime scene and saw investigators’ evidence markings.
“We got up there and saw the little crime scene triangles and markings on the ground,” he said. “Couldn’t be nothing but bullet shells, and a car on the side of the road had its window shot out.”
No additional information was immediately released.
Detectives ask anyone who was traveling in the area and saw the shooting to please contact Detective Jamin Humphress at 615-904-3054 and leave a message. People may also call Crime Stoppers at 615-893-STOP (7867) between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
