Officials say a coal miner who was injured in a mining accident Wednesday morning is in “stable condition.”
The miner, who has been identified as Ray Robinette, is at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in North Carolina, according to a spokesperson for the Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals, and Energy.
The department says the miner suffered a severe arm injury around 5 a.m. at Contura Energy’s Deep Mine 41 near the McClure community. He was running a roof bolting machine at the time.
Robinette’s arm was amputated, according to DMME.
Contura Energy released this statement on the incident:
“We can confirm one of our miners suffered a serious injuiry early this monring at Deep Mine 41. We are working in coordination with state and federal regulators to investigate the incident.”
