CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – A 4-year-old child is in the hospital with serious injuries after they were hit by a car in Clarksville while chasing a ball that had rolled into the street.

According to officials with the Clarksville Police Dept., the crash happened near the Summit Heights Housing complex just after 9 a.m.

Police say they are still working to sort out conflicting statements about the crash.

However, they believe the child was carrying the ball while walking down Summit Heights Court when he dropped the ball and it rolled under a van.

The child was attempting to retrieve the ball from under the van, the 67-year-old driver struck the child’s head with the rear tire.

The 4-year-old child was transported to Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital by helicopter with injuries to the head. Officials say the child was conscious and stable at the time.

It has not been determined if the 67-year-old man will be charged.
