Emory & Henry student charged with weapons, drugs after traffic stop

A traffic stop on cedar creek road in Washington County Virginia on October 19, 2018, at approximately 3:50 p.m., has led to the arrest of an individual being charged with drug and weapons violations.

Matthew Daniel Mathis, age 21, of Loganville, Georgia, has been charged with possession with intent to distribute Marijuana, possession of a conceal weapon and speeding. He was transported to the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail in Abingdon and released a $3,000 bond. Mathis is a student at Emory & Henry College.

According to Washington County Sheriff, Fred Newman, School Resource Deputy Rick Stumbo was conducting radar enforcement near Meadowview elementary school when a 2011 Nissan came through radar at 49 MPH in a 25 MPH zone.

Upon stopping the vehicle, the deputy detected an odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. A search of the vehicle produced a 9mm semi-automatic handgun $6,210 in cash and two baggies of marijuana.
