CLEMSON, SC (WSPA) – Clemson head football coach Dabo Swinney has agreed to a new contract with the university that will pay him an average salary of $9.3 million per year.
The university announced the new deal Friday morning which covers ten years for a total compensation of $93 million.
Swinney has led Clemson into the College Football Playoff in each of the past four seasons. The Tigers have won two of the past three college football national titles.
“I am grateful and humbled by the incredible commitment Clemson has made to me, my family and our football program,” Swinney said in a written statement. “For more than a decade, we have given our all to provide this world-class university and our incredible fans the championship football program they deserve.”
“With this contract, we make a collective statement that we intend to continue pursuing championships and developing total student-athletes for years to come,” said Swinney.
The contract also has language that addresses if Swinney was offered the head football coaching job at the University of Alabama. Swinney would have to pay Clemson $6 million to take the job at his alma mater for at least the next two years.
Swinney has a $4 million buyout to take another head coaching job in college football with an additional $2 million if that position is at Alabama.
