More people in North Carolina may soon qualify to have their criminal records wiped clean, thanks to a bipartisan bill loosening expunction requirements.

“The Second Chance Act” passed the state Senate on Wednesday and would allow offenders with multiple nonviolent misdemeanors or low-level felony convictions to be eligible for expunction regardless of age.

The bill also expands expunctions for 16- and 17-year old offenders and automates expunction for charges that didn’t result in a conviction.
