Pence speaks at Gillespie’s governor campaign rally in Abingdon, VA

ABINGDON (WJHL) – United States Vice President Mike Pence was in Southwest Virginia Saturday for Republican Ed Gillespie’s governor campaign rally.

The rally attracted hundreds of supporters to the Washington County Fairgrounds in Abingdon, Virginia. Pence took the stage just after 7 p.m., the vice president said he was proud to visit a region that supported President Trump’s campaign last year.

Pence discussed the promise for tax cuts under his own term, something Gillespie also wants to accomplish in Virginia, if elected as governor.

Pence said the current administration needs a leader like Gillespie who wants to put money back in the pockets of working families. He said Gillespie is also a strong supporter of the military and wants to repeal Obamacare.

“He’s a life long conservation, he’s a leader who is fighting everyday for a brighter future for all Virginians,” Pence said. “I mean just look at Ed’s agenda, he’s fighting to grow the economy and cut income taxes across the board here in Virginia just like we’re going to do for all of the American people.”

The other republicans that took part in the rally were Jill Vogel, who is running for lieutenant governor and John Adams, in the race for attorney general. While many people showed their support for these three republican candidates, dozens gathered on the corner of Cummings and Main Street in downtown Abingdon to protest the rally.

Protesters held signs as they shared their disapproval for not only Pence, but Gillespie as well.

Demonstrator Jerad Foster said Gillespie doesn’t share the true values of the Appalachian people.

“The values that he has, the policies that he’s ran on, his history in politics as a lobbyist, working with the Bush administration and not necessarily acting in the best interest of the people of this country, let alone the people of Virginia.”President Donald Trump also expressed his support for Gillespie on Saturday before the rally, tweeting “The Democrats in the Southwest part of Virginia have been abandoned by their party, Republican Ed Gillespie will never let you down.”
