Phil Bredesen aims for Senate win by edging away from party

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - U.S. Senate candidate Phil Bredesen is hoping to win in Tennessee by distancing himself from his own Democratic Party.

Polls show Bredesen leading Republican Marsha Blackburn - a congresswoman - in a state President Donald Trump won by 26 points. Bredesen's strength is giving Democrats more optimism about their prospects of taking back control of the Senate.

Bredesen is banking on voters looking back favorably on his two terms as governor and his time as Nashville's mayor. He says Democrats wouldn't be able to reliably count on his vote in the Senate, and he foresees playing a role like that of Susan Collins, the Maine Republican who's broken with the GOP on several high-profile issues.
