An 18-year-old man and a teen girl are in custody after a shooting that killed one student and injured eight others Tuesday at STEM School Highlands Ranch, according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office originally reported that the juvenile suspect was a boy. They updated that information Tuesday morning.

The adult suspect has been identified as Devon Erickson, 18. He will make his first court appearance Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. It’s not yet known when the juvenile suspect will appear in court.

The sheriff’s office has not yet released the name of the 18-year-old student who was killed in the shooting.

Sheriff Tony Spurlock said Wednesday that three victims are still in intensive care.

The sheriff’s office said just before 2 p.m. Tuesday, the two suspects walked into the STEM School Highlands Ranch through an entrance without metal detectors and opened fire with two handguns on students in two classrooms.

Within two minutes, deputies at a nearby sheriff’s office substation entered the school and arrested the two suspects without exchanging gunfire. One of the suspects was detained by the school’s security guard, according to Spurlock. Both suspects were students at the school, and they were not previously known to authorities, Spurlock said.

Spurlock said at least one student encountered the suspects during the shooting,

“We’re going to hear about very heroic things that have taken place at the school,” Spurlock said.

Spurlock said it will take investigators at least two more days to investigate the crime scene.

The school will be closed for the remainder of the week, according to the district. All other Douglas County schools will be open, with heightened security.

Friday was set to be the last day of the school year for seniors.
