Michael Young murder case bound over to grand jury

Washington County, TN (WJHL) – Tearful testimony marked a preliminary hearing Thursday, in the second degree murder case against Michael Young.

Prosecutors charged Young after Jose Mijares was shot to death at the intersection of Lambeth Drive and North Roan Street on February 13th.

Police say an altercation occurred between the two men while they were driving. Once they were stopped, Mijares got out of his vehicle and approached Young’s vehicle. That’s when officers say Young shot Mijares, who they say was unarmed.

Mijares’ 14-year-old son took the stand Thursday and said he watched as his father was gunned down. Court went into recess for a short time after the boy broke down in tears on the witness stand.

Two witnesses who pulled up to the scene told Judge Robert Lincoln the boy told them his father had been shot, and the man who did it was still sitting in the vehicle.

After hearing testimony from a Johnson City Police detective, Judge Lincoln ruled that there was probable cause, and bound the case over to the Washington County Grand Jury.

Young is due back in court May 20th.
