SHELBY COUNTY, AL (ABC) – A state-of-emergency is now in place after a gas leak from the Colonial pipeline in Shelby County, AL.
So far, some 250,000 gallons of gasoline has spilled at the remote area off County Road 91 and Coalmont Road.
In addition, more than 500 people are working around the clock to stop the leak, but unfavorable weather conditions have hampered repair efforts.
Overnight, vapors from the leak settled over the rural area, making the site unsafe for workers.
Operations to repair resume as the vapors clear out.
Because of the disruption, Colonial Pipeline is now saying the restart of the fuel line will happened next week.
The Alabama governor issued a state of emergency because the leak is still not fixed after almost a week of when it was discovered.
Colonial pipeline says the state of emergency will allow for a waiver to let fuel truck drivers drive for 12 hours.
That’s part of contingency plans to help mitigate any disruptions of fuel distribution caused by this leak.
