TRI-CITIES, TN (WJHL)- Demetrius Covington is no longer a wanted man.
Elizabethton Police said he was arrested Wednesday in Dayton, Ohio. Captain Joy Shoun said he would remain there before being transferred back to the Tri-Cities.
He was arrested in the 200 block of Central Avenue in Dayton with the assistance of the U.S. Marshal’s Office, according to our sister station WDTN. Investigators said a tip led them to an apartment complex where they apprehended Covington.
Covington was added to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation’s most wanted list Tuesday. He was wanted by the Elizabethton Police Department and the TBI for the first-degree murder of his three-year-old step-son. Covington, 28, is also known as Demetrius Somerville.
“He is believed to be armed and dangerous he’s also a known member of the Bloods street gang,” TBI spokesperson Leslie Earhart said.
On Monday, Elizabethton police charged Covington with aggravated child neglect after the young boy was taken to a hospital in critical condition by his mother. The boy was said to have multiple injuries.
The TBI and the Elizabethton police said Tuesday the child had died as a result of the injuries.
We found out Wednesday through an open records request, that Covington has a lengthy criminal record. His criminal history from the TBI shows over the past 10 years he’s faced multiple drug charges and assault charges.
“What you have to keep in mind in this case is the victim,” Earhart said. “He’s wanted in connection with the death of a three-year-old child and most would agree that if you’re capable of harming a small child you’re capable of doing just about anything.”Copyright 2016 WJHL. All Rights Reserved.
