Man found dead after single car crash in Abingdon, Va.

ABINGDON,VA (WJHL) – An Abingdon man was found dead after he hit a tree with his car Sunday Morning. Police tell News Channel 11 they responded to the 100 block of Lowland Street just after 10:30AM in the ElderSpirit Community.

Authorities confirm the victim as 80-year-old Robert Wolfinger.

Officers say they found a gray SUV against the trees on the East side of the ElderSpirit property with tis airbag deployed. The driver was still seated in the driver’s seat, but was unresponsive. Emergency response crews made several attempts to revive the driver but were unsuccessful.

Police tell us that further investigation revealed that Wolfinger turned around in the parking lot, in preparation to park. The vehicle accelerated suddenly, Eastbound across the parking lot. The vehicle left the driveway striking a tree approximately 15 feet from the driveway.

Authorities say Wolfinger was transported to Johnston Memorial Hospital at the request of the medical examinerCopyright 2016 WJHL. All rights reserved.
