MADISONVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) – A couple from Madisonville, Tennessee is just getting back from a trip to Sri Lanka.

The husband and wife duo missed the Easter morning attacks there by less than a day.

Authorities say nearly 300 people are dead and 500 more were left wounded after terror attacks at multiple sites throughout the country.

Monday night, new security footage shows a man believed to be one of the bombers approaching one church, just before the attack.

WATE 6 On Your Side reporter Elizabeth Kuebel spoke to that couple from Madisonville, now safe at home after everything that unfolded.

“Literally within a couple of hours of us pulling in the drivieway, coming in to our house, we’re getting messages and telling us there was this horrific terrorist attack in a city that we were just in not long ago. It’s just how do you even fathom that you were that close to something,” Elizabeth Rose said.

News broke Sunday morning that hundreds were killed and even more injured in several blasts that rocked churches and hotels.

“It’s terrible to see it. I mean you see people crying and nobody knows what to do. It’s horrific,” said Rose.

She and her husband Michael are shaken by the thought of how close they were. When planning their trip, they decided to leave Saturday instead of Sunday.

“To see this and to think that could have been us if we hadn’t left when we did… We could have been there,” said Rose.

They’re trying now to process everything that’s happened and thinking of all the people they met and encountered on their trip.

“We just want the people of Sri Lanka to know that America is with them and we pray for them and we’re with them all the way. We hope that things get better and just not to give up and stay strong and it will, it will change,” Rose said.

The Roses also say they made some friends in Sri Lanka. They’re continuing to keep in touch with them and offer support.
