RICHMOND, Va. (WJHL)- Virginia State Police officials said a fallen trooper from Southwest Virginia will be honored on Thursday during the 2019 Virginia State Police Officers’ Memorial Service.
The service is set to take place in Richmond and will recognize all of the department’s law enforcement professionals who have died in the line of duty.
During that service, VSP officials said they will be unveiling and dedicating Trooper Dowell’s portrait before his family and fellow troopers.
That portrait will hang inside the Virginia State Police Academy as part of the Colonel C.W. Woodson Jr. Memorial Gallery.
Trooper Dowell died in February after he was shot during a drug raid in Cumberland County.
Dowell, a member of the Virginia State Police Tactical Team, was helping the Piedmont Regional Drug and Gang Task Force with a search warrant near Farmville, Virginia.
A suspect inside the home was shot and killed, state police said.
Trooper Dowell was a Chilhowie, Va. native and was a member of the Appomattox Division Tactical Team (the equivalent of a police SWAT Team).
