Volunteers are needed to clean an illegal animal dump site off Teaberry Road in Carter County after several dead dogs were found there.

Commissioner Patty Woodby with assistance from Keep Carter County Beautiful and Beverlie Margle organized a community cleanup on Saturday, April 27 at 10 am.

Tuesday, deputies with the Carter County Sheriff’s Office arrested 26-year-old Garrett Birchfield of Roan Mountain in connection with the incident.

Birchfield, a former Carter County dispatcher, faces four charges of intentional killing of animals, tampering with evidence, criminal impersonation, theft over $1,000 and aggravated burglary, according to an affidavit from the county.

Carter County Schools superintendent, Dr. Kevin Ward, has given volunteers permission to park across the street from Cloudland High School in the school parking lot.

Directions to the site, from Cloudland High, are:

  • Head east on 19 E toward Crabtree Rd. for 1.3 miles
  • Turn right on Main St. for .03 miles
  • Turn left on West St.
  • Turn right on Old Highway 143 for .02 miles
  • Turn left onto Hampton Creek Rd. for 2.4 miles
  • Teaberry Rd. will then be on the left
