Virginia High to add classes preparing students to work in CBD industry

On Monday, the Bristol Virginia School Board voted 5-0 approving that Virginia High School seeks permission from the Virginia Department of Education to acquire five courses, two of which could help prepare students to work in the CBD oil industry.

The two courses would expand the school’s agricultural curriculum and allow students to learn more about Hydroponics, a growing alternative using a greenhouse.

The courses would be offered to sophomores, juniors, and seniors.

The courses would add on to three areas of study: health science, technical education, and agriculture food and natural resources.

Jan Huffman, the Assistant Principal at Virginia High School, says these courses would give students more qualifications to seek a job with the proposed CBD processing facility, Dharma Pharmaceuticals, in Bristol Virginia.

“As that’s coming to our community possibly we want to make sure our students have opportunities,” said Huffman.

While it is uncertain whether the CBD facility will come to Bristol, Huffman believes the possibility of the proposed CBD processing facility would help their application to the Virginia Department of Education to install the courses.

Huffman says the courses were not introduced with the intention of preparing students to work within the CBD industry. Instead, she hopes the five courses will offer students more experience other areas such management and cybersecurity.

“Every career and technical education course we offer starts with offering students put together a portfolio of their ability and skills whatever that may be,” she said.

If the courses are approved before the upcoming school year, they may be offered as early as next Fall.

Dharma Pharmaceuticals asked to relocate the CBD processing facility somewhere other than the Bristol Mall after plans were announced to build a resort-style casino there. But, the Virginia pharmacy board denied that request, requiring Dharma to continue with its original location at the Bristol Mall.
So far no details have been released about Dharma’s plans for a location.
