Members of the UVa-Wise softball team escaped a bus fire while they were on the way to a game in West Virginia Friday night.

According to Kathy Still, director of college relations at UVa-Wise, the team was on the way to Wheeling Jesuit, West Virginia, when a tire blew out and the bus caught on fire in Marietta, Ohio.

“The UVa-Wise softball team was on its way to Wheeling Jesuit, West Virginia on Friday night when a rear wheel hub came off and blew the rear tire. The bus caught fire in an electrical bag located near the rear tire. The team and coaches were safely able to exit the bus,” Still told News Channel 11.

According to Still, the team’s equipment was originally thought to be destroyed, but some items were saved but the bus was destroyed.

Police who responded to the fire had a local high school bus transport the team and coaches to a nearby hotel.

A charter bus will transport the team back to campus on Saturday.

Chancellor Donna P. Henry says she’s thankful the team and coaches were unharmed.
