USGS: Series of small earthquakes confirmed in Maryville

A series of small earthquakes were recorded in Maryville Thursday by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). 

WATE 6 On Your Side reported on the weak quakes after confirmation came through Thursday evening. 

The USGS confirming the quakes being a 1.4 magnitude, a 1.4 magnitude and a 2.4 magnitude. 

 

WATE 6 On Your Side received several calls and ReportIt! messages Thursday afternoon, with viewers saying they were hearing “loud booms” near Maryville that were shaking people’s houses. 

Some say they felt upwards of 7 or 8 quakes and shaking spells in the Maryville area. As of 11:30 p.m. Thursday, USGS has confirmed three small earthquakes. 

East Tennessee hosts a minor fault line and small earthquakes occur throughout the area.
