UPDATE: Tri-Cities woman ‘safe’ after engine failure leaves Norway cruise ship stranded

Local

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL)- News Channel 11 has learned that a Tri-Cities woman stuck on a cruise ship over the weekend in Norway, is now safe and back on land.

Judith Hammond told News Channel 11′s Kasey Marler she was back on land and making her way to Oslo, Norway where she would then eventually make her way home.

When Hammond first spoke to Kasey via Facebook messenger on Saturday night, she was still waiting to be evacuated from the Viking Ocean cruise ship,…tug boats are helping and maybe we can get into a harbor when wind dies down

Hammond described what it was like as they waited for rescue.

We were in a holding room when a wave burst the window, water pounded, knocking everyone over.

According to the Associated Press, the Viking Sky cruise ship was having engine problems off the coast of Norway and sent a mayday call off Norway’s western coast.

The AP also reported that British and American tourists made up a majority of the passengers.

The ship was on a 12-day cruise along Norway’s coast.

Norwegian officials have now opened an investigation into why a cruise ship carrying more than 1,300 people set sail despite storm warnings, forcing a major evacuation after a mayday call had been issued.
