UPDATE: TDEC believes seasonal algae caused brown water at Watauga Lake

State environmental regulators believe algae was to blame for discolored water spotted at an East Tennessee lake.

The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation says test results revealed several strains of seasonal algae at Watauga Lake. However, TDEC says the algae strains were not abundant enough to be considered a bloom.

The agency believes the algae caused water in the lake to turn brown.

TDEC says no further tests are planned.
